ELYRIA — Elyria police are asking the public for help identifying a man who reportedly robbed the Speedway on Lorain Boulevard.
At 3:38 a.m. Saturday, officers were sent to Speedway for a robbery that occurred 20 minutes earlier. Officers met with a man who worked at the store who told police he had opened the door for a man delivering newspapers and then had stepped outside to smoke when he was approached by the robber.
The employee said the robber asked for a cigarette, and after taking a cigarette pushed him into the store and told him he had a gun.
Once inside the store, the robber demanded money from the cash register, which totaled $374, according to a police report. The man then left on foot toward state Route 57.
Police said the robber never produced a gun during the robbery.
Police obtained security video of the robber, who was described as a black man in his mid-30s, approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall and 230 pounds, with a short beard. He was wearing a black, waist-length leather jacket and a black knit hat.
Photos of the man were posted Monday afternoon on the Facebook page of the Elyria Police Department, which asked for help from the public to identify him.
