Woman treated, cat dead after fire

AVON LAKE — A fire around 4:30 p.m. Monday at a home at 105 Lakewood Drive caused substantial damage.

Firefighter Laddie Lid said the homeowner awoke to the sound of breaking glass and called firefighters. Lid said the woman, whom he didn’t identify, was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. The home is owned by Mark and Patricia Breese, according to the Lorain County auditor’s office.

Lid said the fire began on the first floor of the one-floor, wood-framed home, and firefighters needed about 10 minutes to contain it. Firefighters were assisted the Avon, Bay Village and Sheffield Lake fire departments.

The fire — in which a cat died of smoke inhalation — caused about $75,000 in structural damage to the 54-year-old home and $25,000 to belongings. The cause of the fire was under investigation Monday.
