Boys soccer: Blue senior all-stars find offense in second half, put Red away

EATON TWP. — What started out looking like a low-scoring affair, turned into a shootout in the second half Saturday at the annual Lorain County Soccer Coaches Association boys senior all-star game on the artificial turf at Midview High.

The Blue team found the net four times in the second half and went on to post a 5-3 win over the Red team.

In the opening half, both teams played strong defense through the first 28:25 before Blue broke the ice when Cole Plumb of Amherst scored from 10 yards out off an assist from Alex Strimbu of Avon Lake. The goal came with just 11:25 remaining until halftime.

“Yeah, it looked like it was going to be low scoring and close for a while,” said Plumb, who had 11 goals this season. “I just got open on the right side of the box and put it in. The match was fun to be a part of.”

Red tied it on an unassisted goal from 10 yards out on the left side by Braidan Takrics-Centeno of Elyria High with just 5:35 left in the half.

Blue dominated the first-half with 13 shots, six of them on goal, to just seven for Red, two on goal.

Blue quickly added an unassisted score with only 4:24 gone in the second half when Jake Gonzalez found the net off a loose ball from 20 yards out.

It was tied again just 10 minutes later when Avon’s Fredrik Troupe scored an unassisted goal from just in front of the net.

Blue went ahead to stay, 3-2. when Keystone’s Dakota D-Fox scored on a breakaway halfway through the second half. Kevin Grau of Midview made it 4-2 with a shot from 12 yards out, assisted by Strimbu, with 8:24 remaining.

“I was left open on the side,” said Grau, who had three goals during the season. “It was a great experience today playing with all these great players. I had a lot of fun.”

Nate Wade of North Ridgeville cut Red’s deficit to 4-3 with a short shot off an assist by Steven Poskocil of Elyria, with 5:43 remaining. Strimbu then added an insurance goal for Blue from 10 yards out with 2:05 remaining. Kyle O’Connor of Avon Lake got the assist.
