LORAIN — A Vermilion man who police say was stealing cigarettes from Cigarette Outlet on Oberlin Avenue was arrested after he was chased out of the store and tackled by a bystander.
Police were sent to the store, at 5245 Oberlin Ave., at 3:34 p.m. Saturday for a reported theft in which the suspect was captured and detained by a man who had him pinned down in the parking lot outside.
Police found Patrick Simmons, 22, of Vermilion, laying face down on the parking lot with a man, John Riley, 49, holding him down.
Simmons said, “Yeah man, I’m a junkie. You got me,” according to a police report.
Simmons had reportedly walked into the store and asked the clerk for two cartons of Newport cigarettes. When the clerk grabbed the cartons from behind the counter, Simmons smacked her hand, grabbing one carton and ran out of the store, according to the report.
Riley, who was a friend of the clerk who happened to be in the store, chased Simmons out of the store, tackling him in the parking lot. Riley had small cuts on his knuckles from struggling with Simmons, police said.
Simmons was arrested and charged with robbery. He was arraigned Monday where he entered a plea of not guilty.
His pre-trial was set at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 26.
