CLEVELAND – Jimmy Haslam keeps winning in the Browns-Steelers rivalry.
After years as a minority owner with Pittsburgh, Haslam bought the Browns this year for $1 billion. He’s 1-0 against the Steelers after a 20-14 win Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The Browns had lost four straight to Pittsburgh and 16 of 17 in the series.
Rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden improved to 1-0 against the Steelers, but was in the locker room for the finish after suffering a head injury in the fourth quarter.
Colt McCoy filled in for the final two possessions but didn’t throw a pass.
The Browns (3-8) benefited from the absence of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as Pittsburgh couldn’t sustain anything on offense.
The Steelers (6-5) committed eight turnovers – five fumbles and three interceptions by third-string quarterback Charlie Batch. They had two fumbles they recovered.
The Browns did just enough with the extra possessions.
Weeden threw a 5-yard touchdown to tight end Jordan Cameron in the second quarter.
Running back Trent Richardson scored from 15 yards in the third quarter for a 20-14 lead. The Browns hung on from there.
Weeden appeared to hit his head on the leg of left tackle Joe Thomas on a third-down incompletion in the fourth quarter. He was slow to get up and quickly taken to the locker room.
The Steelers continued to have chances until the end, but self-destructed.
Browns cornerback Joe Haden intercepted a deep pass with three minutes left. The Steelers got it back with 2:36 left and no timeouts, but Chris Rainey fumbled after a short completion. Linebacker D’Qwell Jackson knocked it loose from behind and Phil Taylor recovered.
All four Steelers running backs lost fumbles – Rashard Mendenhall, Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer and Rainey.
