George Stephen Machovina, 61, a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, passed away unexpectedly early, at his home in Pinehurst, North Carolina, Sunday, December 2, 2012. He was born in Elyria May 25, 1951, where members of his family still reside.
George was a graduate of Elyria Catholic High School in 1969 and also a graduate of the Air Force Academy in 1973 where played defensive tackle. The team went to the Sugar Bowl in 1971. George enjoyed golfing, boating and the Cleveland Browns. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and MIRA. “Big George” (as his children called him) loved his family, crossword puzzles, cigars, and golf. He was a member of the Elyria Sports Hall of Fame.
George is survived by his son, Christopher (Elizabeth) Machovina of Oakton, Virginia; and his daughter, Amy (Sean) Nagle of Arlington, Virginia; two grandchildren, Justin and Elizabeth; four brothers, Bill (Marcia) Machovina, Jim (Mary) Machovina, and Marty (Nancy) Machovina, all of Elyria, and Greg (Susan) Machovina of Huron; one sister, Teresa Machovina of Elyria; a sister in law, Karen Machovina; and many nieces and nephews. A dear friend, Mary Ann Blake also survives.
George was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lila (Gibson) Machovina; one sister, Cathy Kothe; and one brother, Paul Machovina.
Friends will be received in the Reichlin Roberts Funeral Home, 327 Cleveland Street, Elyria, Friday, December 14, 2012, from 6 until 8 P.M. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012, 12:30 P.M., at St. Jude Church (please meet at the church), 590 Poplar Street, Elyria, with the Reverend Father Frank P. Kosem, Pastor, as the Celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria, where full military honors will be held.
