Swimming: Simpson takes four seconds at Viking Invitational

CLEVELAND — Hawken senior Micah Simpson could have felt a bit sorry for himself. The former Lorain Torpedo YMCA swimmer managed four runner-up finishes in Saturday’s 38th annual Viking Invitational at Cleveland State’s Busbey Natatorium.

He held his chin high, however, as he came away with career-record times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.20) and the 100 butterfly (51.00). Simpson also had the meet’s quickest split in the 400 free relay (45.52), more than a second faster than anyone else.

“I’m pretty happy with tonight,” Simpson said. “Last week I swam six events (three individual, three relays) at junior nationals (for his club team) in Tennessee and left there a little disappointed. I stepped it up this meet, partly because of the team. I was very happy with how I did.”

Simpson tied a meet record in the 200 free, but Canisius High junior Jack Boyd of New York was simply better. Boyd shattered the record in 1:38.55. Boyd, this year’s meet MVP, defeated Simpson in last year’s final, 1:42.42 to 1:43.21.

Simpson came back later in the 100 fly, but this time it was Chagrin Falls senior Austin Quinn who was quicker (50.06). Both defeated defending champ Peter Simcox (51.83), a St. Ignatius junior.

His other second-place finish came as a member of the 200 medley relay (1:37.78) that finished behind St. Ignatius (1:36.51).

“I might not have been quite as fast as I should have been tonight, but it’s still good,” Simpson said.

Simpson has attended Hawken since sixth grade after transferring from the Firelands school district. He lived in Wakeman through the end of his sophomore year, commuting daily to the school in Gates Mills. Simpson trained with the Lorain — now Vermilion — YMCA Torpedoes for six years, but switched to the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins.

“(Hawken coach) Jerry (Holtrey) said in a pep talk before the meet tonight that he’s really going to step up our training the next two months,” said Simpson, the 2012 Division II state runner-up in the 100 free and 200 free. “I know we’ll be ready for the end of the season.”

St. Edward junior Miguel Poblete of Avon also had quite a meet, posting a career record en route to a third-place finish in the 100 breast (1:00.06).

Poblete led the first 50 (27.77) before losing to St. Edward teammate Will Ryan (59.72), a senior, and Hawken junior Elijah Spiro (59.77). Ryan split 27.96 and Spiro 27.89 in their first 50.

“My stroke has been awesome all season,” Poblete said. “I’m five seconds ahead of where I was this time last year. I felt very good in practice all week. I’m very tired, but I went I get up and race I really don’t feel anything.”

Poblete also finished 11th in the 200 individual medley (2:05.33), winning the ‘B’ final. St. Ignatius senior Derek Hren defended his title in 1:54.68.

The CSU Viking meet, hosted by St. Ignatius, is a non-team scoring meet.

Amherst coach Cathy Loboda said that her team only swam in the preliminaries because the seniors wanted to go to the school’s winter formal.
