MEDINA — An Elyria man was arrested this morning after sheriff’s detectives recovered about $100,000 of stolen merchandise from two properties in Lorain County.

Stephen C. Bugg, 44, was arrested on a single charge of felony theft for his alleged role in stealing at least 20 electric guitars — each valued between $1,700 and $7,000 — 25 pairs of shoes or boots, socks and dozens of sweatshirts and T-shirts from a CPS Delivery Systems warehouse in Liverpool Township, according to a Medina County Sheriff’s Office report.

Lt. Travis Colonius, of the Medina sheriff’s office, said Bugg is an employee at CPS warehouse, and detectives recovered the merchandise during an approximately nine-hour raid of two homes — one in Lorain and another in Oberlin — from Wednesday evening through early this morning.

“This was a substantial recovery,” Colonius said today. “We’re still counting and totaling the cost of everything.”

Detectives received a tip about missing merchandise from managers of CPS warehouse, which stores items to be delivered to area outlet stores, Colonius said.

“It’s been about a two-week investigation based on information we got from CPS management,” Colonius said.

The case remains under investigation, said Colonius, who noted additional charges against Bugg are pending and more suspects could be arrested.

Colonius said the sheriff’s office received assistance from the Lorain and Oberlin police departments in recovering the items.

Bugg is being held at the Medina County Jail on $40,000 bond.
