Thurman E. Knight

Thurman E. Knight, 88, of Elyria, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Lorain on September 21, 1924, to John William and Idell Mobley Knight of Erin Tennessee, who moved to Sheffield Township in 1922.

Thurman lived in Lorain County for most of his life with the exception of the time that he resided in Florida from 1983 to 2009. Thurman was a graduate of Clearview High School, class of 1942, and was Vice-President of his class. He proudly served his country in The U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Thurman was a Staff Sergeant with the Third Air Wing in the Pacific. He served four years, having been honorably discharged on November 25, 1947. He was a life-long member of the VFW Post 1079 in Elyria. Thurman retired after 36 years as a foreman in the foundry at U.S. Steel. During his time in Florida, he was an Elder at Faith Fellowship Church in St Petersburg, where he was loved by many. He enjoyed being with family members, going out to eat, playing the fiddle and walking the beach. He was a distinguished fiddle player and a member of the Soggy Bottom Blue Grass Association. Thurman served as President of the Lorain County Chapter of Pinellas County Florida. Upon returning to Elyria in 2009, he joined Midway Baptist Church in Elyria with his sons, where he came to love the members and his Pastor, Chuck Keesee.

He is survived by his sons, Tom Knight, James Knight and Robert Knight, all of Elyria; his caretaker, Mary A. Knight; grandchildren, Keith (Deana) Knight of Sheffield Township, Summer (Richard) Barnett of Lorain and Stacie Knight of Lorain; great grandchildren, Mason and Josslyn; step children, Shelly Fellegyhazi of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Larry Marshall of Arizona, Tammy (Charles) Bergstrom of Richmond, Virginia, Mary (Mark) Ventura of Strongsville, and Terri (Ed) Strayer of Westlake; seven step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary C. Knight; sister, Marge Ugenus; and by her parents.

Friends may call Friday, December 21, 2012, from 5 until 8 P.M., at Midway Baptist Church, 41812 Griswold Road, Elyria, where services will be held Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 10 A.M. The Reverend Chuck Keesee, Pastor, will officiate. Burial with full military honors being provided by the Thomas Mihalis VFW Post 1079 in Elyria will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park Amherst Township.
