Register by Jan. 7 to vote on Midview levy

GRAFTON — Residents in the Midview School District have until Jan. 7 to register to vote in the special Feb. 5 election on a 10-year, 9.75-mill property tax levy whose passage is crucial to staving off a huge deficit and devastating cuts including more than 50 staff.

Voters may register in person at the Lorain County Board of  Elections, 1985 North Ridge Road, Lorain, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

The elections board will offer extended voter registration hours Jan. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The large levy would raise $4.6 million a year, and cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $298 in annual taxes.

Passage of the issue is necessary to prevent the elimination of 20 teaching and 30 nonteaching positions as well as the jobs of three administrators which were approved during last week’s school board meeting. Failure of the levy will also result in the reduction of the school day for students in kindergarten to grade 12, no busing for students living closer than 2 miles from school and the elimination of most art, music, foreign languages and athletics.

Midview voters have not approved new money for the schools since 1993.
