Darrell O. Harris, Sr., 82 years of age, of Wakeman, was welcomed home for Christmas by his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Monday morning, December 24, 2012, from the New Life Hospice Center in Lorain, following a brief illness. Darrell was born November 28, 1930 in Henderson, Kentucky. He was raised and lived in Kentucky, coming to Elyria in 1966. Wakeman has been his home since 1972.
Darrell worked as a computer technician for TRW Singer Division for 26 years, retiring in 1990. As a young man he worked as a Theater Technician, operating the giant movie projectors in theaters in Kentucky, as well as theaters in Lorain. Darrell was a member of Camden Baptist Church in Camden Township. He was an accomplished dulcimer musician and enjoyed playing in the “Old Time” musical circles. He considered himself a photography hobbyist. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, particularly traveling with his wife throughout the United States.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Lillian Josephine (nee Adcock); sons, Darrell O. Harris, Jr. and wife Sandy of Jeffersonville, Indiana, David West of Wakeman; daughter, Patricia Dohn and husband Glenn of Shepardsville, Kentucky; three granddaughters; one great grandson; and sister, Ruby D. Gish of Henderson, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John in 2008; and by his parents, Andrew Jackson and Ruby D. (nee Phillips) Harris.
Friends may call Thursday, December 27, 2012, from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012 at 1 P.M. in the funeral home. The Rev. Lawrence Nocella and the Rev. William Kopas, Pastors of Camden Baptist Church, Camden Township, will officiate. Burial will follow at Florence Township Cemetery in Birmingham, Ohio.
