Erwin “Butch” “Froggy” Lee Armstrong, 68, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Bradley Bay Health Center in Bay Village, following a brief illness. He was born February 5, 1944 in Amherst. Erwin was raised in Amherst and lived primarily in the Lorain County area before moving back to Amherst in 1999.
Erwin was employed as an assembler at Avon Lake Ford Truck Plant for 17 years, before retiring in 1990. He was also employed as a DJ for WOBL and then at WOBC hosting a blue grass music hour. Erwin served as an announcer sound technician for different blue grass events around Lorain County. His hobbies included playing guitar, and traveling in his RV. Erwin was an CB Radio enthusiast and loved collecting old records albums.
Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Virginia Armstrong; son, Keith Armstrong of Wellington; daughters, Ernestine “Tina” Fehnor of Florence, South Carolina, Terri Brown of Hampton, Georgia, Clare McCall of Avon Lake; step son, James Rider of Elyria; step daughters, Telitha Lang of Hampton, Georgia, Deloris Stevens of Cleveland, Valeria Cogdill of Hampton, Georgia, Mary Bryan of Elyria; 22 grandchildren, many great grandchildren; and his sister, Betty Meyers of Vermilion.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 23 years, Vada Armstrong in 1994; his infant son, Erwin Armstrong in 1968; his step sons, Raymond and Samuel Rider; his brother, Leo and sister, Ruth; and by his parents, Leo and Gladys Armstrong (nee McKinney).
Friends may call Friday, December 28, 2012 from 6 to 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 1 P.M. in the funeral home. The Rev. James Justics, Pastor of Firelands Community Church, will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
