Sam T. Vickers, Sr., 80, of Elyria, peacefully passed away Sunday, December 30, 2012 at Center Ridge Nursing Home in North Ridgeville. He was born May 14, 1932 in Scooba, Mississippi and moved to Elyria in 1957.
Sam retired from the former GM Fisher Guide plant in Elyria, where he had worked for 25 years, and was a member of UAW Local 780. He was also a longtime member of Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist Church in Elyria, serving as head of the junior usher board.
He enjoyed cars, landscaping, gardening and sitting on “Garret”, which is what he called his front porch.
Sam will be sadly missed by his children, Sam Vickers, Jr. of San Diego, California, Linda Vickers of Lorain, and Diane Simmons of Elyria; seven step children, Veronica (Joseph) Anderson and Stephanie (Ernest) Carter, both of Elyria, Laretha (Bruce) Fowler, Darryl (Angie) Shelton, Ronald (Cathy) Shelton, all of Lorain, David (Jenette) Shelton, Michael Shelton and Codie Shelton, all of Elyria; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives and friends.
Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Essie Vickers (nee Jackson); his second wife, Celie Bell Vickers (nee Young); sons, Harry and Dennis Vickers; his parents, Sam Vickers and Annie Vickers (nee Lockett); seven brothers, Sip, Jim, Eddie Lee, Willie, Herbert and Hoze Vickers; three sisters, Ruthie B. Midcalf, Mary Howard and Maggie Peters.
Calling hours will be Thursday, January 3, 2012 from 5 to 8 P.M. at True Vine Primitive Baptist Church, 737 W 18th St., Elyria, where funeral services will be held at 11 A.M., Friday, January 4, 2013. Elder James Furcron, Jr., Pastor of True Vine Primitive Baptist Church and Rev. Earnest Robinson, Pastor of Mt. Nebo Primitive Baptist Church, will co-officiate. Burial will be in Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria.
