LAGRANGE — Opportunity knocked for Lutheran West’s Mike Faler, and the first-year wrestler responded with an 11-4 victory over Wellington’s Aaron Ferguson, helping the Longhorns earn a victory over the Dukes in their second dual meet at a Patriot Athletic Conference quad meet at Keystone on Thursday.
When Lutheran West’s Ryan Moore failed to make weight at 152 pounds and moved up to 160, Faler dropped down to 152 to face Ferguson.
“In that last match, why we beat Wellington was because of our 152-pounder, a first-year senior,” Lutheran West coach Dave Ressler said. “Mike Faler was the star of that Wellington match. It might even be his first varsity win, so it was big.”
Faler’s win not only gave the Longhorns a victory over Wellington, but also helped make Lutheran West wrestling history.
“This is the first time we’ve ever beaten two Stars (Division) teams in one night,” Ressler said. “We’ve never beaten two, so that’s big for us. Usually, the Stripes teams lose to the Stars teams because they’re bigger schools, so this was a big win for Lutheran West.”
Prior to the Wellington match, Lutheran West defeated the host Wildcats on the eighth tiebreaker scenario after the teams finished with the scored tied 36-36.
“It was a little bit of a surprise,” Ressler said. “We thought we had it locked up and then, all of a sudden, they sent out a kid at 195 and they had said that (Jacob) Worthington was going up. They took their 182-pounder and put him at 195 because he couldn’t wrestle and then, all of a sudden, that ties the match. It was a big lift to pull it out and win and use that momentum for the next match.”
Although the Wildcats lost their matchup against Lutheran West on a tiebreaker, it did not deter them. They went out and defeated an undermanned Oberlin squad, earning six victories by forfeit against the Phoenix.
“Everybody’s not healthy and at the right weight yet,” Keystone coach Jim Pycraft said. “They did as good as they could for what we had tonight. We’ve got some kids that are hurt. They know what they’ve got to do. Especially when you’re wrestling people in the conference, if they don’t have full teams, you try to wrestle as many matches as you can. Everybody did what they had to do.”
Despite its lack of experience on the mats, Wellington took its first match of the night, 50-12, against Oberlin, who had only five wrestlers able to compete.
While many Dukes were able to wrestle only one match, senior 132-pounder Benjamin Provoznik earned two wins. Already up 15-3, Provoznik managed to pin Oberlin’s Morgan Bremke in his opener. He followed with a 13-0 major decision over Lutheran West’s Bryce Deblock.
“Ben Provoznik is my only senior and he looked pretty good,” Wellington coach John Sedlick said. “We expect more out of him.”
Oberlin’s Tyler Thomas was also able to earn victories in two matches. Thomas, who’s returning from an elbow injury, opened with a pin of Wellington’s Ferguson, then pinned Keystone’s David Gale.
“Last week, at the Vermilion duals, he had to default out after the first match,” Oberlin coach Craig Enos said. “He didn’t wrestle any more matches because he reinjured it. We’re taking it match to match and he’s doing all right. It’s his determination. He wants to do well. In the back of my mind, I don’t want him hurt for the rest of the year. I’m always leery.”
