LORAIN — The New Year’s morning fatal shooting of one man and wounding of three others brought a call by Mayor Chase Ritenauer at Monday’s City Council meeting for a comprehensive anti-violence strategy.
Tuesday’s shooting at the Liberty gas station on Broadway on was spillover from an earlier fight at the Cotton Club nightclub, and the gas station has had crime problems in the past. Ritenauer vowed that the city would look to pull liquor permits of bars that serve alcohol after closing hours and ask judges to consider higher bonds for defendants with extensive criminal records.
He said the initiative would be linked to anti-gang education efforts in Lorain Schools.
“We’ve got to stand together ultimately to fight for our community,” Ritenauer said.
