Stolen ferret returned to Elyria pet store

ELYRIA — A ferret was taken from an Elyria pet store yesterday but was returned within a couple hours.

Tom Shupe, manager of Pet Supplies Plus on Market Drive, said the ferret was in good condition when family members of the man who was believed to have taken it returned it to the store.

According to a police report, the man, in his early 20s, took a cream-colored ferret valued at $140 about 5:30 p.m. yesterday. He placed it under his coat and walked out of the store, and a customer alerted employees to the theft, the report said.

A store employee told police that she received a phone call from a cousin of the man shortly after the theft. The cousin told her the man has developmental disabilities and frequently steals items, the report said.

The cousin told the employee the ferret would be returned, and Shupe said that happened in less than two hours.

Police Lt. Chris Costantino said today that he was not sure if the man would face charges.
