Lorain woman hit and killed by van in Amherst

AMHERST — Lorain resident Nicola Wade was killed around 6:10 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of Cooper Foster Park Road after being struck by a van.

Wade was walking east in front of Rehabilitation Services Inc. at 1317 Cooper Foster Road when she was struck by an eastbound Ford Ventura van, according to police Sgt. Mark Cawthon. The accident occurred between Linn Road and Oberlin Avenue.

Cawthon wouldn’t release the name of the 22-year-old driver and said police haven’t decided whether she will be charged.

Police are expected to release the name of the driver today and said she is a Lorain resident.

Wade, 38, of 1508 Herbert Drive, died of blunt trauma to the chest and stomach, according to Dr. Stephen Evans, Lorain County coroner. Cawthon said that when officers arrived, people at the scene were administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but Wade was unconscious.

He said Wade was pronounced dead at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.

Cawthon said the preliminary investigation found no indication that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Toxicological tests will be done on Wade to determine if alcohol or drugs were in her system.

Cawthon said police interviewed witnesses but haven’t determined if Wade was walking on the shoulder or in the road or trying to cross the road.

The passenger side of the van’s windshield was shattered from hitting Wade, and the passenger’s side headlight was broken and the bumper damaged.

Cawthon said he didn’t know how far Wade was thrown by the impact of the collision, which knocked off Wade’s boots and hat. They lay by the side of the road about 30 yards from where the van was stopped about an hour after the crash.
