Elyria man charged with CVS robbery

ELYRIA — An Elyria man faces robbery and vandalism charges in an incident around 6:35 p.m. Saturday at the CVS Pharmacy at 443 Cleveland St.

Demarco Tarrant-Smith is accused of assaulting a security guard at the store who said he tried to detain Tarrant-Smith and a 16-year-old. The guard said were stealing hair-coloring products, according to police reports. Guard Joseph Jones said Tarrant- Smith shoved him and left the store and then returned as Jones was escorting the youth to a security room in the back of the pharmacy. Jones said Tarrant-Smith slammed him into a shelf and Tarrant-Smith and the youth ran from the store.

Officer Michael Mahony wrote in his report that he arrested Tarrant-Smith and the youth behind a building on the north side of Taylor Street south of the railroad tracks and found the stolen items in a backpack Tarrant-Smith was wearing.

Tarrant-Smith is due in Elyria Municipal Court today. He was being held in lieu of a $2,500 bond Sunday.

The youth was taken to a juvenile detention center.
