Credit card scam reported at hotel

ELYRIA — Reported credit card fraud at Red Roof Inn, 621 Midway Blvd., was part of a nationwide scam, according to a police report.

On Sunday, a customer at the Red Roof Inn said she received a call to her room the night before from a man claiming to be the hotel manager. The caller stated that the company had lost its Internet connection and all reservations. He asked for the credit card number that she had reserved her room with. The woman provided it. On Sunday morning, the woman called her bank and found that her credit card had been charged $265.

Several other customers reported receiving similar calls between Saturday and Sunday morning.

A front desk clerk told police everyone who checked out of the hotel Monday morning had received an identical call.

No one else gave their credit card information. Similar incidents occurred at Red Roof Inns in other cities, as well as a Super 8 motel in Elyria, the clerk said.
