Harold E. Schmalz died Friday, January 11, 2013, at Zephyr Haven Health & Rehab, Zephyrhills, Florida. Harold was born August 11, 1931 in Amherst. He grew up on the family farm in Vermilion, graduating from Vermilion High School in 1949.
As a young man, he worked as an apprentice electrician with Clarence Wolf, Vermilion. He retired as a maintenance foreman from American Crucible Co., Lorain, after 40 years. He was a member of the Good Sam Camping Club for many years, and enjoyed camping around the country. He had a passion for gardening and raising fresh vegetables and fruit, and did so all his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his wife, Bobbie; Son, Jeffrey Schmalz; brother, Charles Schmalz; and parents, Elsie and Charles Schmalz.
He his survived by his daughter, Julie (Denny) Sawyer, Florida; and son, Craig (Paula) Schmalz of Colorado; grandsons, Carl Sawyer, Eric Schmalz; and granddaughter, Alyce; brother and his wife, Russell (Beverly) Schmalz; sister-in-law, Betty Schmalz; and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a Vermilion memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Zephyr Haven Health & Rehab Center, 38250 A Avenue, Zephyrhills, FL 33582, Attention: Activities Department.
