Alfred “Al” M. Lassen, 89, a life resident of Lorain, died Thursday, January 17, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lorain, April 4, 1923, to the late Alfred M. and Effie (nee McCain), Al was a 1941 graduate of Clearview High School.
After graduating, Al enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served from 1941-1946. He was a Boatswain’s Mate 2nd Class and participated in the Normandy Invasion. Al was a coxswain, landing the troops on the beaches of Normandy. When Al returned from military service, he was employed as a mechanic at various shops in Lorain County. For 25 years he was a towmotor operator at General Motors, Elyria, retiring in 1987. In retirement, he was a transporter for multiple car dealerships in Lorain County.
Al was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1662, Amherst. He enjoyed boating and motorcycle riding and repair. Most importantly, Al loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include seven children, Sandy Wood of Lorain, Patti (Pete) Richard of Amherst, Judy (Rick) Schwedt of Brook Park, Jennifer (John) Jacovetti of Lorain, Janet (Jake) Rosso of Lorain, Susie (Terry) Cain of Amherst, Mike Taylor of Lorain; 17 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Lassen of Vermilion, Helen Tisler of Lorain, Betty Lassen of Independence, Missouri; and his brother, Myron (Peg) Lassen of Tennessee.
Al was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Lois J. (nee Kinder) who passed away December 31, 2011; a sister, Edith Watkins; and three brothers, Richard, Robert, and Eugene Lassen.
Family will receive friends Sunday, January 20, 2013, from 3 until 7 P.M., at the Garland-Misencik Funeral Home, 851 Park Avenue, Amherst. The funeral service, officiated by Reverend Mr. Robert Dybo will be at 10:30 A.M., Monday, January 21, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard ,will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Amherst.
