The rumors began Friday night, and according to David Ivey, they appeared on “Joey Lorain” and “Eminem is my buddy” Facebook pages. Ivey said he is not sure who started the rumors, but he was contacted by a family member who asked if his son was all right shortly after he had talked to his son Saturday afternoon.
Joseph Ivey, or “DJ Joey” as he is referred to by local residents, frequently stands on the corner of Elyria Avenue and East 28th Street with a boom box and sign reading, “Honk Lorain if you love me.”
Ivey was featured in The Chronicle-Telegram’s “YourTown” section Jan. 12 for his performances.
The 31-year-old has been dancing in the area since 2001, and David Ivey said his son is pretty well-known.
“He’s a celebrity in his own right,” he said, laughing. “Most people like him.”
That was evident Saturday as people flooded Facebook, asking about the rumors.
On a Facebook page designed to help Joseph Ivey meet his idol, Eminem, more than 300 people “liked” a status saying that Joseph Ivey had not been shot.
“This shows how big of an impact he has had on anyone from Lorain without him probably even realizing it,” wrote one woman.
David Ivey called the person who started the rumors “childish and selfish,” but he said he is not worried. “There are a lot of people here that try to look after him,” he said.
