Events to celebrate the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy


Today

This year’s main event, “One Dream — One Purpose,” is 11 a.m. when the Elyria High School Performing Arts Center will host a presentation of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech “The Birth of a New Nation.”

The recording of the sermon, in which King tells the story of Ghana’s fight for independence from British rule, will precede a dance performance from Move It! Dance Project, music from Zion Corn and Raymon King III. The MLK Community and Education Fair also will be taking place in the EHS Performing Arts lobby.

Winners of this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Essay and Poetry Contest will be announced during the celebration. The contest, open to Elyria public and private school students, challenges its participants to interpret King’s work into original art. Local organizations also will be recognized during the ceremony.

A Commemorative Walk will be from Ely Square to Elyria High School at 10:30 a.m. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. is the King Holiday Soul Food Dinner at Marcel Hall in Elyria.

In Lorain, a march and community forum will begin at 1 p.m. at the South Branch Library.

At 6 p.m., the Lorain Public Library South Branch will host its King celebration with music, dancing and more. The library asks that those planning to attend preregister by calling (440) 277-5672.

The Lorain Public Library also is hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at 1 p.m. in its main branch. Those interested in participating may preregister by calling (440) 244-1192 or (800) 322-READ, ext. 449.

Oberlin will host a memorial ceremony for King’s life and work “Rededication to the Dream” in Martin Luther King Jr. Park at 12:15 p.m.

Tuesday

The Lorain County Community College Office of Student Life King Celebration will take place 11:30 a.m. at the College Center with keynote speaker the Rev. Marcettes L. Cunningham of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Elyria.

Wednesday

Events will close with the 34th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Workshop at 7 p.m. at Kanisa House, Cleveland Street, Elyria. For information, call (440) 366-3244.
