Man who admitted ‘whooping’ kids at birthday party pleads no contest

ELYRIA — An Elyria man who used a belt to beat two children attending a birthday party at his home pleaded no contest to assault during a hearing in Elyria Municipal Court on Friday.

Antonio Jenkins, 27, was fined $500, but $300 of that was suspended, according to court records. He also was given a six-month suspended jail sentence.

A woman called Elyria police in October to report that her children, ages 4 and 6, had returned from a birthday party with bruises on their backs and stomachs.

She sent Jenkins several text messages and he replied that the children had been swearing and throwing rocks at his house.

He admitted to “whooping” the children, police reported.
