Willard “Bill” Hayden Hammond, 85, and a resident of Elyria, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Wesleyan Village in Elyria, following a lengthy illness. He was born May 17, 1927 in Delta, Kentucky. He had made his home in Elyria since 1953.
Bill proudly served in the United States Army. He owned and operated Bill Hammond’s Barber Shop for 54 years before retiring. Bill was an active member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Lorain. He had a servants heart and served his Lord in the church as a deacon and also a Sunday School Teacher. He loved to read his Bible and share the good news of the gospel of Christ with others. He was the chairman of visitation for the church and was the leader of Evangelism Explosion. His hobbies included crossword puzzles.
Bill leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 59 years, Irene Hammond (nee Hackner); his sons and their wives, Ronald D. and Dorothy Hammond of Elyria, Kriss K. and Mary Hammond of Jupiter, Florida, Barry E. and Isabell Hammond of Berlin Heights; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Homer, Howard, Orvil, Pete and Olen Hammond; sisters, Eva Morrow, Aire Miller, Opal Thomas and Wilma Looper; and his parents, Robert T. and Nannie Hammond (nee Simpson).
Friends may call Friday, February 1, 2013 from 5 until 8 P.M. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 11 A.M. at Fellowship Baptist Church, 5046 Broadway, Lorain. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
