With their fourth straight win, the Middies improved to 20-7 overall, 13-2 in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League’s Blue West Division. The Shoremen fell to 3-25, 2-13 with their 11th straight defeat.
The outcome was decided in the first period as Midview scored six goals, five via the power play. Senior Brock Behler scored three of his four goals in the first 15 minutes.
“We’re not trying to look down at other teams,” Behler said. “We’re trying to play our hardest and work on the things we do best, getting the puck out of our zone and working in their offensive zone.”
All three of Behler’s first-period goals came on the power play because of a single penalty — a five-minute tripping penalty on Shoreman senior defenseman George Quinn.
“We try not to take our heads out of the game, thinking like we’re going to run all over them,” Behler said.
“We work very hard on power play at practice, most days for at least 15 minutes.”
The teams met twice earlier, with Midview prevailing 10-4 on Dec. 28 and 13-3 on Jan. 5. The first meeting was at the Gilmour Tournament.
Behler’s fourth goal ended the game with 8:35 remaining in the third period.
“Avon Lake was playing short-handed and was putting itself in bad spots,” Midview coach Rick Verlotti said. “We’re playing very well and we’re hoping to carry that play into the Baron Cup. We’re going in clicking on all cylinders.”
The Middies open Baron Cup III play Tuesday against Cleveland Heights at Brooklyn Recreation Center.
Avon Lake was minus senior forward Pierson Callander and junior forward Logan Cherni, which didn’t help matters any. Callander is serving a two-game suspension for fighting in a 13-3 loss at Cleveland Heights on Feb. 1. Cherni has missed the last three games due to illness.
“I’m proud of the guys,” Avon Lake coach Scott Stimac said. “They worked until the end. They fought hard. We knew it was going to be an uphill battle.”
