Elyria Sports Hall of Fame class set; Late C-T publisher Cooper Hudnutt to be honored

ELYRIA — The Elyria Sports Hall of Fame selected its 42nd class Monday night.

This year’s inductees include Elyria High volleyball standout Brooke Bader, longtime EHS softball coach Ken Fenik, EHS basketball star Adam Larrick, Elyria Catholic football state champion Briant McLaughlin, LCCC three-sport star and EC coach Jan Sito and the 1973 boys basketball teams from Elyria and Elyria Catholic.

The Hall of Fame will honor the late Cooper Hudnutt, the former publisher of The Chronicle-Telegram and avid supporter of Little League East, with the Distinguished Service Award.

The induction banquet will take place May 4 at the Lorain County Community College’s Spitzer Center. Information on tickets can be found at ElyriaSportsHallofFame.org.

Bader is a 1996 EHS grad who was first team All-Ohio her senior season, helping lead the Pioneers to the state final. Elyria went 74-8 during her career. She went on to star at Bucknell and was named the Patriot League MVP in 2000.

Fenik has led the Pioneers to a pair of Division I softball state championships, and three state runner-up finishes. His teams have appeared in nine Final Fours, and he has compiled a 428-75 career record — putting him in the top 12 on Ohio’s all-time wins list.

Larrick is a 1994 EHS grad who is seventh all time on the Pioneers career scoring list — owning the 11th and 14th best single-season point totals. He went on to star at Charleston Southern, leading the Buccaneers to the NCAA Tournament.

McLaughlin, a 1977 EC grad, was the quarterback of the Panthers’ first state championship team in 1976. He earned all-conference, all-district and All-Ohio honors in high school, then went on to star at Ashland University.

Sito competed on the softball, field hockey and basketball teams at LCCC in 1969, was the starting catchers on three ASA state championship teams and is a 2000 Lorain Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

She coached girls basketball and softball at EC, was the first female to coach a boys Little League team and was a longtime official in multiple sports.

The two Elyria basketball teams both made it to the state Final Four in 1973, and have numerous Hall of Fame athletes from their squads. Hudnutt was an avid sports fan and golfer, and was a longtime sponsor of Little League East.
