John D. Beres, Jr., 76, of Columbia Station, passed away Monday, February 4, 2013 at EMH Healthcare in Elyria, following a long illness. He was born July 30, 1936 in Congo, Ohio and he was a 1954 graduate of Elyria High School.
He was a veteran and served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. Mr. Beres had been a resident of Columbia Station for 48 years. He was employed at Van Dorn in Strongsville as an assembler for 26 years and retired from there in 2001. Mr. Beres was also a police officer for the Grafton Police Department and worked there part time for 12 years and retired in 1999.
He attended North Eaton Christian Church. Mr. Beres was a member of the National Rifle Association, the United States Navy Cruiser Sailors Association, F.O.P. Lodge #54 in Grafton and he was a life member of the V.F.W. Post in Grafton. He was a former member of the Lorain County Sheriff’s Auxiliary. Mr. Beres enjoyed reading and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carlene (nee Houseknecht); son, Dan Beres (Shelley) of Canton, Michigan; two grandsons, David Ishiyama and Brett Beres; sister, Donna Blevins of Mentor; brother, Tom Beres of Norwalk; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. Beres, Sr. and Dorothy Beres (nee Benedict).
A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 11 A.M. at North Eaton Christian Church, 35895 E. Royalton Rd. (Route 82), North Eaton. Rev. Charles A. Butcher will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the church. Burial will be private at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the donor’s favorite charity.
