Boy’s alleged beating leads to man’s arrest

ELYRIA — Police arrested an Elyria man after receiving a report from Northwood Middle School that he allegedly beat his 12-year-old child.

On Monday, James P. Smith, 34, was arrested and charged with domestic violence and endangering children.

Officers were sent to Northwood earlier in the day and met with Smith’s 12-year-old child, who had a swollen and bruised face, according to a police report.

Smith’s child told police Smith had beaten him at his Furnace Street home that he shares with his stepmother and siblings. The boy told police he asked his stepbrother to move out of the way of the television he was watching, and his father called him upstairs and yelled at him for “bullying” his brother.

Smith was arraigned Tuesday at Elyria Municipal Court, where he entered no plea. He was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled at 2 p.m. Feb. 21.— from staff reports
