16th annual Paczki Ball features dancing, doughnuts and bikinis

LORAIN — Bikinis, boxers, polkas and paczkis could only mean one thing: the annual Paczki Ball.

Some 575 people attended the ball Sunday night at DeLuca’s Place in the Park. The 16th annual ball is staged by Kiedrowski’s Simply Delicious Bakery and is a celebration of the Kiedrowski family, their Polish heritage, and their customers and friends. Bakery owner Tim Kiedrowski said the idea for the event was to stimulate business in the winter. The first event in 1998 drew about 200, but it has sold out for the last decade.

“I wanted to make this a dress-up affair where you could come out and feel good about yourself,” Kiedrowski said.

In addition to polka dancing, the event featured male employees in bathing suits displaying the latest lines of baked goods. They were accompanied by tattooed models in bikinis.

Kiedrowski said the ball is a thank-you to customers and employees for their loyalty to the bakery at 2767 Cooper Foster Park Road in Amherst on the Lorain border. The family-owned bakery was opened by Kiedrowski in 1984, and he said his workers put in long hours.

“I try to showcase my employees because what they do for me is endless in the course of a year,” he said.

Kiedrowski’s son, Tim Kiedrowski Jr., said most of the ball attendees are customers. He said the bakery has developed a strong rapport over the years with good customer service and a fun atmosphere.

Kiedrowski Jr. said the impression the bakery wants to make on customers is, “We’re here for you, not for us.”
