District Girls Basketball: Lorain gets past Olmsted Falls; Ridgeville, Midview ousted

ELYRIA — Underdog Olmsted Falls held Lorain star Alex Harris to three field goals Saturday and guard Angelique Flores to two.
One result was the Bulldogs were within five points of the taller, faster Titans with nearly three minutes left in their Division I sectional tournament game.
But after baskets a half-minute apart by Hannah Hammeren and Jessica Koch, it was a downhill ride for the Bulldogs. Flores made three of four foul shots, Harris two in a row and Lorain went home with a 32-25 victory.
It was the second game of a triple-header in the Elyria Catholic Coliseum. In the first game, Westlake rolled over North Ridgeville 58-26 as 10 Demons scored. In the finale, North Olmsted drilled Midview 67-35.
Lorain-Olmsted Falls was not by design a low-scoring game. The teams missed a combined 76 shots (43 by Falls) and shot a cumulative 36.4 percent from the field, Lorain 17.5 and Falls 18.9.
Harris finished with a game-high 14 points and Flores scored 13. Flores was 9-of-10 at the foul line. Kerri Gasper led the Bulldogs (10-13) with nine points and Melissa Holcomb scored seven.
The Titans (15-8) move on to play Amherst at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in a sectional final at the Coliseum.
“I think it was just a really bad basketball game,” Bulldogs coach Matt Fulton said. “That was just bad offense.”
The 6-foot-3 Harris picked up her second personal foul less than three minutes into the game. She said it didn’t worry her. She sat until early in the second quarter and was never called for another foul.
“I knew I just had to play a little harder,” Harris said. “I knew it was going to slow me down a little bit, but I just had to play smarter.”
After holding Ridgeville (6-17) to a field goal in the first quarter, Westlake (15-8) rolled to a 35-10 lead at the half. The Demons got 11 points each from Maggie Zimmerman and Rachel Collins, and 10 apiece from Liz Kobe and Monica Fury. Isabella Pecchia and Alyssa Riley each scored eight points for the Rangers.
The Demons (15-8) will take on Elyria in another sectional final at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The Middies trailed North Olmsted just 17-11 after one quarter but the Eagles outscored them 50-24 over the last three quarters.
Michelle Palange’s 17 points led the Eagles, while Molly Linn’s 12 points paced the Middies (0-23).
