District Swimming: Avon Lake’s Brittany Menzer 3rd in 500 free, hopes to get at-large bid to state

BOWLING GREEN — Lorain County’s state swim meet hopes ride on Brittany Menzer.
The Avon Lake freshman put up a school-record 5:10.79 en route to a third-place finish in the 500 free at Saturday’s Division I Northwest district meet.
The placing earned her a possible at-large berth for next weekend’s state meet in Canton.
The top two finishers in each district event earned automatic berths to state, while the next 16 fastest times from Ohio’s four districts earned at-large berths. Qualifiers will be announced by 3 p.m. today at www.ohsaa.org.
“I’m happy with my placement and really hope that it’s good enough,” said Menzer, who dropped three seconds. “I understand 5:13 qualified last year, so I’m hopeful about my chances for (this) afternoon.”
Avon sophomore Erin Pettegrew finished fourth in the 100 fly with a personal-record 58.79. A solid performance, but not one she believes is quick enough to make the cut.
“Honestly, I don’t think I made it, but it’ll be close,” Pettegrew said. “It was a good race. I went way too deep off my start so there’s definitely things I can improve upon, but I got my best times. This pool is weird. On all of my starts I went deep. I’ve never gone that deep before, so I don’t know if it’s my starts or the blocks. It was pretty bad.”
St. Edward junior Miguel Poblete of Avon was the top local finisher in the 100 breast, finishing fifth in a career-record 59.76. Amherst senior Tyler Moore was seventh (1:00.76) and Elyria sophomore Noah Katrinchak ninth (1:02.52).
“I’m hopeful,” said Poblete. “I looked at the Southeast district results from yesterday. My time here would have placed me seventh there. This makes up for my 200 IM disqualification at districts.”
A 2011-12 state qualifier in the 100 breast, Moore’s high hopes didn’t translate.
“I felt tired,” said Moore. “I felt good coming into the meet, it just didn’t happen (in the pool). I’m frazzled. I’ll just have to wait and see what happens (today).”
Eight meet records were set, four boys and four girls. The Toledo St. Francis boys won their 47th district title. Amherst’s boys (eighth) and Avon Lake’s girls (12th) were the top local teams.
The state meet will run Wednesday through Saturday in Canton.
