She graduated with honors from Medina High School in 1963 and attended Ohio University before graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1969 from Ashland College, receiving her degree in Secondary Education. She shared her love of knowledge as a substitute teacher for many years.
Rita was a history buff, and enjoyed reading various books on history and politics. She was a faithful follower of the daily news. She also liked working in her flower garden, decorating and entertaining during the Christmas Holidays.
Surviving is her husband, Homer, to whom she married on October 2, 1964; sons, Ryan (Brenda) Sooy of Hudson, Brad (Christina) Sooy of Homerville; grandchildren, John, Hannah, and Summer; sisters-in-law, Lois Cano of Huron, Jan (Roger) McFrederick of Elyria; nieces and nephews, Dawn (Jon) Samples, Greg McFrederick, Mike (Renee) McFrederick; great nephews, Mat and Ben McFrederick; and also numerous cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Newt Standen and Pudge (wife Mannion) Standen; and in-laws, Frank and Leona Sooy and Richard Cano.
Following Rita’s request, there will be no visitation, and a family service and burial of cremains will be in Spencer Cemetery at a later date.
