Mother Lula Marie Johnson, 87, of Lorain, known to many as “Big Lu”, passed away Monday, February 25, 2013, at Mercy Regional Medical Center of Lorain, following a lengthy illness. She was born December 21, 1925 in Selma, Alabama, and later moved to Lorain in 1949.
She worked as a domestic and home decorator for the former Elkins Realty Company. She was a member a Cathedral of Praise Worship Center, having served on the Pastor Aide and Mother Board. She was also a former Buckeye Eastern Star. Lula enjoyed gardening, cooking, shopping, traveling, reading the bible, and church activities. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Helen Johnson-Diaz (Roberto Diaz); brothers, Charles (Mary) Johnson of Chicago, Illinois and Andrew (Mary Alice) Johnson of Selma Alabama; daughter-in-law, Christine Kender of Lorain; eight grandchildren, Montell, Enjoli, Ryan, Charlania, Roberto, Jr., Justin, Kenya and India; 16 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; a host of nieces and nephews; her home health aide, Jessica Allgood of Elyria; and other relatives and friends.
Lula was preceded in death by a son, Lonnie Gray; her parents, Robert and Lula Johnson, Sr.; brothers, Frank, John, Rance and Robert, Jr.; sisters, Minnie Cooper, Lucy Johnson-West, Betty Brown, Mable Levin and Daisy Stovall; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 3, 2013 from 6 to 9 P.M., at Cathedral of Praise Worship Center, 4545 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral service will be Monday, March 4, 2013, at 11 A.M. District Elder Melvin Brown officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
