Loose line zaps awning

ELYRIA — An electrical wire that snapped from a power pole was blamed for damaging more than 100 feet of metallic awning at a Cleveland Street shopping plaza Saturday morning.

Firefighters were called to the shopping strip at Cleveland and Olive streets about 8:30 a.m. where they found that a live electrical wire had come loose from a utility pole and fell onto the metallic awning in front of businesses including Convenient Food Mart, China Wok, and Cozzeria Pizza, according to Elyria firefighter Bryant Lieux.

“When the wire broke, it fell down and made contact with the awning, charging it,” Lieux said.

There was no fire or fire damage from the incident, although the arcing wire is being blamed for blowing out some exterior lighting, Lieux said.

“It was built with two-by-four wood construction, but no wood burned through,” Lieux said.

Lieux estimated more than 100 feet of the awning was damaged.

The Convenient Food Mart was the only business of the three open at the time of the incident.

“We believe they had a one- to two-hour delay (in operating) because we used fire tape to barricade off the area for a time until it was determined to be safe,” Lieux said.

An employee at the store confirmed business was suspended for about two hours.

Lieux had no damage estimate.
