Walter S. Szlempa

Walter S. Szlempa, 90, of Elyria, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013 at The Wesleyan Village in Elyria, following a long illness. He was born December 26, 1922 in South Amherst.

Walter served with The U.S. Navy See Bee’s in Okinawa, Japan. He was a shipping foreman with Stanadyne Steel Division (Moen), retiring in 1983.

Walter was a member of St. Mary Church, a life member of the Elyria United Polish Club, life member of VFW Post 1079, AmVets Post 32, and Holy Cross Holy Name Society.

He enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas with his wife, horse racing, and was an avid natural golfer, and an avid Cleveland sports fan.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Sheller (Dennis) of Stillwater, Oklahoma; two sons, Gregory Slempa (Alicia) of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and John “Jack” Szlempa (Molly) of Elyria. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Anne M. (nee Sabol), whom he married in 1947; his parents, Joseph and Mary (nee Alexdrowicz) Szlempa; a sister; and two brothers.

Friends may call from 1 to 4 P.M. (today) Sunday, March 3, 2013 at The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria, 440-322-4626, where closing prayers will be at 12:30 P.M. Monday, March 4, 2013. A funeral Mass will be at 1 P.M., Monday, March 4, 2013 at St. Mary Church, 320 Middle Ave., Elyria, where Rev. Fr. Charles Diedrick will be the Celebrant. Burial will be private at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria.
