Marianne Ellen Ashbrook Whitaker Divers

Marianne Ellen Ashbrook Whitacre Divers, 89, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2013, at Fisher-Titus Medical Center. She had resided at Gaymont Nursing Center since 2012. She was born April 29, 1923 in Cleveland, to the late Linda Louise Lange Ashbrook Jarrett and Louis Denton Ashbrook II.

She lived and attended school in Cleveland until she completed 3rd grade when she and her two siblings and her mother moved to the Florence-Birmingham area. She was a 1941 graduate of Birmingham, High School and then attended Mt. Sinai School of Nursing in Cleveland, where she was in the Army Nurse Corps Cadet program and earned her Registered Nursing Degree in 1944. After graduating with her RN, she served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1945 through 1946, during World War II, as the Charge of Quarters Nurse at Newton D. Baker Army Hospital in Shepardstown, West Virginia. After the war, upon returning to the local area, she performed private duty nursing for a time, spent a short time as a nurse at Norwalk Memorial Hospital and after 35 years retired as the Head of the Obstetrics Department at Allen Memorial Hospital in Oberlin. While her kids were growing up, she worked midnight shift full-time so that she would be home with the kids during the day. She also found time to volunteer as a Brownie Troop and Girl Scout Leader. She served as a volunteer at Red Cross Bloodmobile drives, was a member of the Wakeman Grange, Huron County Farm Bureau, and, for a few years, taught Bible School in the summer at the Wakeman Congregational Church, where she was a member. After she retired she worked part-time at the Back Door Florist Shop in Wakeman and did some volunteer work and helped with fundraising for various community organizations, such as the Wakeman Library, Friends of the Wakeman Library and the Wakeman Fire Dept. Auxiliary.

She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Edie (Mark) Painter of Willard; Dorothy (Tom) McGuinness of Mansfield, Texas; and King (Debralee) Divers of Milan. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Colin (Catherine) McGuinness of Texas, Seth (Alicia) McGuinness of Texas, Kent (Becky) Painter of Willard; Ross (Lindsay) Painter of Willard; Carisa Painter of Shelby, C. Kelsey Divers of Milan, and Kale Divers of Milan. She was also blessed with one great granddaughter, Avery McGuinness of Texas and one great grandson; Madden McGuinness of Texas. She is also survived by a brother, Robert A. of Ashbrook, Utah; and a half sister, MaryLou (Ashbrook) of Crohan, Massachusetts; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death in 2000 by her husband of 48 years, Harold L. (General) Divers, whom she married March 15, 1952 at the Congregational Church in Florence. She was also preceded by her sister, Dorothy (Ashbrook) Kocher in 2011; her mother, Linda Jarrett in 1963; her stepfather, King E. Jarrett in 1983; her biological father; Louis Ashbrook II in 1971. She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Louis Denton Ashbrook III; and her first husband, Paul Whitacre in 1951.

Friends may call Saturday March 9, 2013, from 11 A.M., until the time of services at 2 P.M., at the Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper Street, Wakeman. Burial will follow at Wakeman Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Wakeman Congregational Church, Friends of the Wakeman Library, or Stein Hospice.
