Opposition in Elyria’s 3rd Ward bows out of primary

ELYRIA — Elyria teacher Mark Jessie, who is running for City Council in the 3rd Ward, will be unopposed in May because the second Democratic candidate, Fred Trimble, has withdrawn.

Trimble, who lives on Defiance Avenue on the city’s east side, had his name crossed out on the candidate list on the Lorain County Board of Election website. He originally filed a petition Feb. 6 to run in the primary.

Jessie, 56, will now advance to the November general election to face incumbent Republican Garry Gibbs. But the teacher said he will continue campaigning as if he had an opponent.

With Trimble out, all candidates running as ward candidates in Elyria will advance to the general election.

The only true primary race will be the at-large race where five candidates — incumbents Mike Lotko, Vic Stewart and Tom Callahan, along with Bill Grace and Chuck Martin — will compete for four positions.
