14-year-old student assaulted, threatened to kill teacher, report says

ELYRIA TWP. — A 14-year-old student was taken to the Detention Home last week after he allegedly assaulted a teacher and threatened to kill him.

According to a report from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Westwood Middle School in Elyria Township Thursday.

John Srnis, 50, the gym teacher, told them his class had been playing basketball when he told them the game was over and students went into the locker room.

Srnis heard the 14-year-old shout an expletive and told him to go to the office, the report said. The teen then began to argue with another student, and Srnis said he got between them.

Srnis said the teen then struck him in the face with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground. When he was able to get to his feet, Srnis said the boy swung at him again, and he couldn’t recall if he was punched more than once, the report said.

As the 14-year-old was being escorted to the office by another teacher, he began yelling that he was going to kill Srnis, the report said.

Srnis declined medical treatment; however, police observed a red mark on his face.
