Lillian J. Piggott, 89, of Sheffield Lake, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013 at her home, surrounded by her loving family following a long illness. Mrs. Piggott was born in Amagon, Arkansas on November 19, 1923, the daughter of the late Henry and Ruth (nee Sutherland) Pennington.
Raised as a farm girl, she attended and graduated from nursing school in Memphis, Tennessee. Following graduation, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a pharmacist mate during WWII.
After World War II, she moved to Lorain and in 1947 she married Myron “Bill” Piggott, who preceded her in death on February 9, 2007. Mrs. Piggott returned to college and received her bachelors degree in elementary education. She then continued her education and received her master’s degree in special education from Kent State University. She taught for more than 20 years, finishing her career in the Elyria School System.
She was a member of Sheffield Lake United Church of Christ in Sheffield Lake. She enjoyed making hand sewn dolls, quilts and quilted wall hangings.
Mrs. Piggott was a member of the Lorain County Retired Teachers, Friends of Domonkas Library and volunteered with the Sheffield Lake Meals on Wheels program. In 1997, she was named to the Lorain County Gallery of Women and was named Sheffield Lake Woman of the Year.
She is survived by her sons, Michael L. (Rose Ho’a) Piggott of South Jordan, Utah, Richard A. Piggott of Augusta, Georgia, Robert D. Piggott of Sheffield Lake; grandchildren, Steven-Michael Young Crowder, Kathryn O. Piggott, Elizabeth Piggott and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Phillip L. Piggott in 1960; sisters, Peggy Neal, Betty Davis; brothers, Harold Pennington, J.W. Pennington, Tony Pennington, Henry Junior Pennington, and Wayne Pennington.
Friends may call Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 15, 2013 at 10 A.M. in the Sheffield Lake United Church of Christ, 603 Sunset Ave., Sheffield Lake, with Rev. Robert Smith, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
