Clark was named to the 2012-13 Associated Press Division IV All-Ohio first team Tuesday night, a week after the 5-foot-9 guard was named the Division IV Northeast Lakes district player of the year.
“I was more shocked than anything when I heard I was selected All-Ohio,” said Clark, a Parma resident. “During the season all I ever thought about was I wanted to win and wanting to go to states, you never really think about individual honors.”
Clark has yet to decide where she will attend college, but she said she has been recruited by Division II’s Notre Dame College and Walsh University, and the University of Rio Grande — an NAIA school in southern Ohio.
Clark began her high school career at Regina in South Euclid, then transferred to Lake Ridge as a sophomore after Regina closed due to declining enrollment. At Lake Ridge, she didn’t play in the sectional tournament during her sophomore and junior years when the school received a postseason ban for recruiting violations.
“When I was a freshman I didn’t want to dribble, I just wanted to shoot the ball,” Clark said. “And I was a nervous wreck every time I went out on the court. I have been so fortunate to have great high school coaches that enabled me to become the player that I am now.”
Clark had special praise for her final high school coach — first-year Lake Ridge coach Lisa Medvetz. Medvetz guided the Royals to a 22-4 record, but Clark said she will remember more than the wins and losses.
“She had our back on and off the court and she pushed me to become a better leader,” Clark said.
During her senior season Clark put her previous disappointments aside and helped guide the Royals to their first-ever district championship with a 48-28 win over Mapleton in the Creston district final. Clark was the leading scorer in that game with 14 points.
Scoring 12 points per game her senior year, Clark had the lowest average of any of the Division IV All-Ohio first-teamers, but what Clark meant to the Royals could not be explained in a box score.
“Sydney could have been a top scorer, but we had such a balanced team we didn’t need her to do that,” Medvetz said. “She is very deserving of being All-Ohio. She worked so hard this season, I am happy to see her rewarded for it. It was a pleasure to watch her mature both as a basketball player and a person over the past year.”
Clark also averaged eight rebounds, six steals and three blocked shots this season.
Two of Clark’s teammates — Monet Saunders and Sharday Baines — earned All-Ohio honorable mentions.
“I had great teammates this year and we shared a lot of great memories,” Clark said. “Especially winning the first district championship at Lake Ridge and in a small way giving back to the school because we had such great support from everyone this year.”
With her high school career in the rearview mirror, Clark is now looking ahead to college.
“I really wanted to win states this year but life goes on,” said Clark, who plans to major in either marketing or public relations. “I am excited for a new chapter in my life and the chance to be a freshman again, and play basketball and prove myself all over again.”
