Grant allows Carlisle to add firefighters

CARLISLE TWP. — The Carlisle Township Fire Department has been granted $86,095 in federal funding to hire volunteer firefighters.

The money comes from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency SAFER grant program. The program supports the hiring of firefighters and the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, made the announcement Wednesday, and he emphasized the importance of funding emergency services.

“Firefighters put their lives on the line each day to keep our communities safe. These new federal resources will help ensure that Lorain County has the skilled responders needed,” he said. “Carlisle Township Fire Chief Kevin Dembiec was surprised to hear of the grant, but thankful.

Dembiec said the extra funds will be used to hire five to six new volunteer firefighters.
