Kenneth Blake Hicks, 84, surrounded by family, passed away peacefully Monday, March 11, 2013, in Akron. He was born to Blake And Hazel (Honney) Hicks in Eaton Township on October 2, 1928, and spent most of his life in the Elyria area.
He married the love of his life, Agnes Benjamin on September 16, 1950, and they had three children: Ken of North Carolina; Jean Kopp (Ron) of Akron; and Doug of Elyria.
Ken was a man quiet in speech, but loud in action and example. Though not intended, he set the bar very high for those following.
He was a graduate of Baldwin Wallace College, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He had two careers. After retiring from Bendix Corporation, he began managing the BW Industrial Credit Union, which saw a very substantial asset growth during his watch. His community involvement included service on the Lorain County Health Board and on the board of the Lorain County Chapter of the American Red Cross. A longstanding and devout member of Community United Methodist Church, he served in numerous capacities over many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his great granddaughter, Aubrey Hicks.
He is survived by 10 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren, all of whom he loved unconditionally. He also leaves his dear sister, Carol Hale of Ashland, and many cherished nieces and nephews.
After family, his first love was wood working, which allowed him to make wonderful keepsakes for family and friends, including baby cribs, doll houses and furniture. He also enjoyed playing golf (though some teased that he should stick to wood working). He was passionate about genealogy long before it came into vogue, and was thrilled when the internet became available so that he could learn more about his family history. Always ready to lend a helping hand, he volunteered his time to assist the elderly prepare their tax returns until just several days before he died, and he worked with the church’s food pantry until the very end. His was a life not just long, but very well lived.
