Nicholas H. Szabo

Nicholas H. Szabo, 75, of Lorain, passed away peacefully with his family at his side, on the afternoon of Sunday, March 10, 2013. He was born in Lorain on December 13, 1937, and remained a life long resident of the city.

Nick was a 1957 graduate of Lorain St. Mary High School, a veteran of the United States Army and was a life member of Amvets Post # 47 in Lorain. He had been employed as a maintenance electrician at both Ford Motor Company’s Lorain Assembly Plant and the Ohio Truck Plant. He retired in 2000, following a career that spanned 26 years with the automaker. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 2000. Mr. Szabo was an active parishioner of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society. Known as a jack of all trades, he was always ready to lend a hand in helping anyone in need. In his free time, he enjoyed both water and vegetable gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis (nee Mihalko); his son, David (Lisa) Szabo of Avon Lake; daughters, Monica Flaherty (fiance Phil Allen) residing in Bellevue, and Emmy (Jim) Marusin of Lorain; along with seven grandchildren. He also leaves sisters, Margaret Wilson of Garfield Heights, Theresa (Presley) Connolly of North Royalton, and Doris (Steve) Reynolds of West Palm Beach, Florida; and brothers, Stephen Joseph Szabo of Fort Worth, Texas, George (Doris) Szabo of Port Orange, Florida, Anthony (Janice) Szabo of Windsor, Ohio, Theodore (Carolyn) Szabo of Lorain, Chris (Joanne) Hansen of Sun City West, Arizona, Donald (Diane) Szabo of Gretna, Louisiana, Michael Szabo of Annapolis, Maryland, and Very Reverend Father Marcel Szabo of Passaic, New Jersey.

Nick was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna (Nee Mendezezoff) Szabo; his brother, Paul; and his sister, Rosalyn Nadsady.

Visitation will be Friday, March 15, 2013, from 3 to 7 P.M., in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A Parastas service will be conducted at 3 P.M., with a Rosary service conducted by the St. Nicholas Holy Name Society immediately following. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 16, 2013, beginning with Panachida at 9:30 A.M., in the funeral chapel. The Divine Liturgy will follow at 10 A.M., in St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 West 40th Street, Lorain. Very Reverend Marcel Szabo will serve as Principal Celebrant, with Very Reverend Nicholas R.A. Rachford, J.C.L., serving as Concelebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
