About 50 to 100 CenturyLink customers in Central Lorain have been without phone and Internet service for most of the week, according to a spokeswoman.
While a Chronicle reader who called the newsroom said her service went out Sunday, CenturyLink spokeswoman Stephanie Meisse said her information was that the damage occurred Monday. This afternoon she said she had just spoken with a technician and expected service to be restored late Saturday or early Sunday.
Meisse said recent rain was to blame for the outage as it had damaged a conduit that runs under railroad tracks on Washington Avenue.
The Chronicle reader, who borrowed a cell phone to call the newsroom Friday, said she was more concerned for neighbors than the inconvenience the outage was causing her.
“There are people on the street who are elderly, people on the street who have Life Alerts,” she said.
Meisse said she hoped the outage wouldn’t discourage customers from relying on a land-line phone.
“It certainly is not typical,” she said of the outage. “Only in very rare events like this one would service be affected for this long, but we do tell customers to be aware of where their closest emergency facility is located so they can drive to that location.”
She added: “Of course we want to apologize to our customers for this inconvenience and thank them for their patience.”
