Don Rae Johnson

Don Rae Johnson, 80, of North Ridgeville, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on the morning of Thursday, March 14, 2013. He was born in Elyria on July 27, 1932.

He was a long time resident of North Ridgeville. Don was a 1950 graduate of Eaton High School, where he participated in baseball and basketball. He was employed by United Airlines for 34 years, retiring in 1990. Don was an avid athlete and had participated on various athletic teams in the Elyria area. He was a coach in the North Ridgeville Hot Stove League. Don especially enjoyed traveling and cruising with his sweetie, Joann, family and friends. For the past 20 years, Don and Joann enjoyed residency in Zephyrhills, Florida in the winter months.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joann (nee Kelly); a daughter, Kay Johnson of Ft. Mill, South Carolina; sons, Don Johnson, Jr. (wife Judy) of LaGrange, Deron Johnson (partner Charles Brown) of Powers Lake, Wisconsin. Additional survivors include three grandchildren, Amy Yoho (Rob) of North Ridgeville, Blair Johnson of Sorrento, Florida, Patrick Johnson of Lisle, Illinois; five great grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Johnson (Laura) of Elyria.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Kay and Mollie (nee Maddock) Johnson; a twin sister, Donna Fitzpatrick, sister, Beverly Gates; and a brother, Jim Johnson.

Friends may call 4 until 7 P.M., Saturday, March 16, 2013, at The Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 38475 Chestnut Ridge Rd. (at State Rt. 57), Elyria (440) 322-4626, where funeral services will be at 3 P.M., Sunday, March 17, 2013. Reverend Dick Kretchmar, of Birmingham Church, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions, in Don’s memory, to The American Diabetes Association, 4500 Rockside Rd., Suite 440, Independence, OH 44131 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
