UPDATED: Man dead at Pittsfield Township standoff scene

PITTSFIELD TWP. — The man found dead inside the house Lorain County sheriff’s deputies had surrounded for most of the day died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Chief Deputy Dennis Cavanaugh declined to release the man’s name. He said deputies were called to the scene before 10 a.m. today for a domestic disturbance involving a report of at least one gun shot being fired.

The Lorain County SWAT Team moved in around 2:45 p.m. and was inside until around 4:30 p.m. They found the man dead in the basement and it appears he shot himself with a handgun, Cavanaugh said.

EARLIER STORY:
PITTSFIELD TWP. — The standoff that began this morning on state Route 303 has ended and Lorain County Coroner Stephen Evans has arrived on the scene.

County sheriff’s deputies have not released any details yet, but the Lorain County SWAT Team moved in on the house just west of state Route 58 around 2:45 p.m. No gunshots were heard before or after they entered the duplex.

Deputies responded to the house this morning for a disturbance call that involved the report of at least one gunshot. They spent several hours trying to establish contact with the man inside, including having his family urge him to surrender over a loudspeaker.

A car accident took place at the nearby intersection while deputies had Route 303 blocked while the SWAT Team operation was underway.
