Madge Frances Brandau (nee Currier), 92 years of age, and a resident of Vermilion, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at New Life Hospice Residence Center, following a brief illness. Madge was born January 2, 1921 in Henrietta Township and spent the last 60 years living in Brownhelm Township.
Madge graduated from Henrietta High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Oberlin College. She spent over 30 years as a dedicated teacher and reading specialist in the elementary schools of the Fireland’s School District. She loved her role as an educator and her time spent with the children.
Madge was a member of the Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ. She enjoyed traveling, flower gardening, and swimming. As a lifelong learner, she enjoyed reading and participating in book clubs. Madge was a member of the Brownhelm Historical Society. Most of all, she treasured time spent with her grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, John F. (Patricia) Brandau of Amherst, James D. Brandau of Vermilion; her daughter, Rebecca J. (Paul) Hollis of St. Louis, Missouri; five grandchildren, Lauren Brandau, John (Anne) Brandau, William Hollis, Elizabeth (Linzie) Whitsel Oliver, and Rachel Whitsel; three great grandchildren, Tim Whitsel, and Lindsay and Sarah Oliver; her brothers, Richard (Rose) Currier and Tom (Fran) Currier, both of Amherst; her sister, Ruth (Clyde) Harris of Vermilion.
Madge was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John H. Brandau in 2001; her daughter, Cynthia Jane Brandau in 1966; her brother, James Currier; and her parents, Chauncey and Helen Currier (nee Fairchild).
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 10:30 A.M., at the Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ, 2144 North Ridge Rd., Vermilion. The Reverend Elizabeth Terrill will officiate. Burial will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery in Vermilion.
