Joseph John Mlakar, DDS, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013. He was born January 15, 1933 in Lorain, where he was a resident for nearly 70 years. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1951 as part of the “A-class”.
John served in the U.S. Navy for four years, and graduated with a Doctor’s degree in dental surgery, from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, in 1962. He married Maryann (Recznik) in 1958, raised eight children, and practiced dentistry until retirement, at which time he kept busy with his many hobbies. He loved music, and as a young man, had a Polka band. He was an accomplished musician on accordion and organ. He also loved to golf and play games with his family. He was an avid sports fan, always rooting for his OSU Buckeyes. In 2002, he moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the wake of medical problems. He was recently a resident of Heritage Park Assisted Living Center in Fort Wayne, where he had many friends.
He dearly loved his eight children and their spouses, Nancie (Richard Bechtel), Lynn (Robert Janssen), Joseph (Lori), Mike, Tom (Ginger), Jim (Julie), Rob (Heather) and Paul (Kristin); he holds a special kinship with Lori. He also leaves 11 very cherished grandchildren, Nick, Angela, Katie, Luke, Don, Rose, Jake, Jade, Joanna, Noah and Wyatt; and two sisters, Dorothy Myosky and Kathleen Karnak.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Katherine (Nekich) Mlakar; wife, Maryann; and faithful canine companion, Simon.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Thursday, March 21, 2013, at 10 A.M., in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1502 E. Wallen Rd., Fort Wayne, Indiana. Visitation will take place in the church from 9:30 A.M., until the time of the Mass.
The Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, will host Ohio visitation Friday, March 22, 2013, from 4 to 6 P.M., and again on Saturday, March 23, 2013, from 10 to 11:30 A.M. Funeral services will begin with family reflections being offered at 11:30 A.M., in the funeral chapel. Catholic burial rites will follow at 12:30 P.M., with Reverend John C. Retar, Pastor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Parish, officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where joint military honors will be conducted by VFW Post # 451 and American Legion Post # 30. Friends and family are invited to attend Saturday Vigil Mass with the family at 4 P.M., in St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, 2143 Homewood Dr., Lorain.
