Sean Atkinson, 40, was charged with operating a vehicle impaired, driving under suspension, seat belt violation and aggravated menacing last Thursday following the incident.
Police received a call from Brandon Serrano at 7:16 p.m. March 21. Serrano, 21, told police he was being chased by Atkinson and his stepson, Vincent Wells, 21, as he ran down Liberty Avenue.
Atkinson was stopped on that road, and he was arrested after being pulled from the car by officers. He said, however, that he was not involved in the initial altercation as police reported, and he was on his way home with Wells when he was pulled over.
“I went down to get my son to keep him from getting in trouble,” he said.
Serrano told police the argument began after Wells saw Facebook messages he sent to Wells’ wife. He said Wells chased him with a knife after Atkinson made reference to guns being in the home.
Atkinson said no weapons were involved, and he never threatened Serrano. He acknowledged that Wells chased Serrano after Serrano sent a Facebook message to Wells’s wife reading, “Are you DTF?”
The message made reference to a sexual act, according to Atkinson.
“Vermilion police was making it out like I was some crazy person,” he said. “I feel like my rights have been violated.”
After Atkinson was handcuffed, he completed a field sobriety test, according to a police report. Police said Atkinson was given a breath test, but the equipment gave an error, so he submitted a urine test.
Atkinson admitted to drinking three beers, according to police. His also license had been suspended.
“I’ll admit that I never should have been driving,” Atkinson said Wednesday.
He added that, because he suffered a broken back previously, he couldn’t chase after Wells, and he was trying to keep him out of trouble.
Atkinson was later charged with resisting arrest. He said he suffered some injuries during the arrest, and he posted pictures of the injuries showing several small scratches and bruises on his Facebook page, “Sean Da Man Atkinson.”
